Creature: Secret Show @ MACM - July 4th

Posted on July 5, 2008

CreatureA few weeks ago, I reported back to you about the Q live show saying that Creature was great and that I’d be sure to check out their next Montreal performance. True to my word, I got the chance to check out a secret show that was happening last night at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal. I also went out and bought their album subsequently to that Q performance. I’m very pleased with the outcome of both of these: the purchase and the show.

Last night’s audience was a bit strange. The room was full of fans as well as people from all ages who apparently dropped in as part of their museum experience. I’m not sure if everyone was into it at first, but I’m ready to say that Creature won the crowd over pretty quickly with lots of charisma and dynamic stage energy. The Jazz Festival is bringing in an unbelievable amount of people once again this year, and though this show wasn’t part of the festival, it seemed to benefit from the overflow of the events that spilled into the museum, which happens to be at the heart of the Quartier des Spectacles.

Creature 2I truly enjoy their album (No Sleep At All). It’s something that’s great to listen to when I’m in dying need for something to pick me up, like in the morning while I’m getting ready for work for example. It’s very much of the dancy-pop style and I’m pretty sure that their dynamic energy and fantastic stage presence is something that will take them far. Keep an eye on those guys, they’re about to blow up into the stratosphere. It’s only a matter of time before the word catches on and all their shows sell out. Creature is an overwhelmingly good-looking, stylish and terribly sexy band. They are the epidemic of hot Montrealers that makes the outside world consider us as one of the sexiest cities in the world.

As far as the music go, I wouldn’t go as far as saying that they’re virtuosos or amazingly talented musically, but rather talented in terms of delivering a superb stage presence. It’s really their style, charisma and explosive dynamics that’ll bring the crowds rolling in. Though their album is great and benefits from the joys of studio perfection, their live performances aren’t exactly flawless. Many times I noticed that their singing was a bit off and not quite in tune. The instruments sounded great, especially the guitar and drums, but constructively speaking, the vocals could really use some work.

I would nonetheless encourage you all to see this band live if you’re looking for a super-fun time, Creature is sure to get you moving your hips and feet.
