How will YOU cope with the transit strike?

Posted on May 22, 2007

So as some of you may have heard, the Montreal City Transit went on strike last night at 12:01. This has been brewing for quite a while. I rememeber back in February how they were talking about it already. Well now it’s happening. I know alot of you readers don’t come from Montreal, so you may not realize how ESSENTIAL the City Transit actually is. I once saw a line up that stretched two or three blocks outside the Metro station. All of these, people, stranded because the Metro had stopped running. I would say that most people in Montreal, probably take either the bus or the metro (or both) at least ten times a week. This affects SO MUCH PEOPLE!!!! It affects everyone…even me. The STM will keep services going at the high traffic hours, but the problem with that is, not everyone works from 9 to 5. But alot of people do. And all these people PLUS the people who will have waited all day for a bus will be cramming into a bus or metro during the service hours. This creates very HIGH TENSION situations. I was talking with a coworker last night who explained how a couple years ago, the same thing happened and when busses finally came, people were almost punching each other out to get on. This is crazy. And I understand. If I lived in Ahunstic and worked downtown until 7 pm and had to wait around until 11 for a bus, you’d better be fuckin sure I got on the first one out (especially since last time it was winter).
Well, this wasn’t worrying me too too much. I have a bike and it’s the nice season…so I don’t need the public transit to get to work. But today for example, I have a meeting at McGill… McGill is far. I wouldn’t usually take my bike to go that far… but today I don’t have a choice. At least I have my bike. But if I worked far…I’d be fucked, like so many people right now.
I feel deeply for all these people and hope that this issue will be resolved promptly without too much damage being done.

Have a good strike everyone!
